Suncoast Singers is in its 39th year! Here are some of our highlights:
1980 Began performing as the Largo Community Chorus, under the direction of Mary Jane Johns (also founder of Clearwater Community Chorus)
1982 Chorus was renamed Suncoast Singers after receiving seed money from Howard and Maxine Cook
1983 Registered as 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation
1985 Presented a full production of The Music Man at Largo High School Auditorium
1988 Began rehearsing in Largo High School's Choral Music room
Began performing at St. Petersburg Junior College Auditorium in Clearwater
1989 Performed at Tampa Bay Buccaneers halftime show
1990 10th Anniversary Celebration
1995 Mary Jane Johns retires as artistic director and a new director is appointed
The chorus celebrated its 15th Anniversary
1996 Suncoast Singers becomes an anchor performance group at the new Largo Cultural Center
2004 Artistic Director Rob Knabel and accompanist Dede Natale are hired
Moved rehearsal venue to Faith Presbyterian Church in Seminole
2005 Celebrated with 25th Anniversary with a Silver Jubilee Show
2006 30 members of Suncoast Singers performed with the East Lake High School Chorus and other choruses from around the nation at New York City's famed Carnegie Hall. The concert commemorated 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Mozart's birth
2007 Moved mid-Pinellas County performance venue to Faith Presbyterian Church in Seminole
Began hosting dinner concerts to benefit the church's Honduras Mission Team
2009 At the request of audiences, Suncoast Singers began giving dinner concerts for all concert themes at Faith Presbyterian Church
2010 Celebrated Suncoast Singers of Florida's 30th Anniversary
Select members of Suncoast Singers performed at Carnegie Hall
2010/11 For its 31st season, Suncoast Singers of Florida presented "Christmas USA" and "When We Were Young"
2012/13 Started performing at Richey Suncoast Theatre in New Port Richey
Started perfoming at Honeywell Minnreg Hall in Largo
2013 Moved rehearsal venue to St. Paul United Methodist Church in Largo to attract more north Pinellas County singers
2015 Celebrated 35th Anniversary with A Century of Song
Returned to performing at the Largo Cultural Center
Invited to perform at Mease Manor, a new north county performance venue for the chorus.
Ticket prices were reduced
Publicity efforts were expanded to include social media
A new grant development manager was recruited
Performance risers were donated to the chorus.
2016 Concert venues will include local high schools. Concert participation will include Elementary and High School students.
2017 Performed at new venues at East Lake High School, St. Petersburg High School and Christ Presbyterian Church. Students at East Lake High School and St. Petersburg High School share the program with Suncoast Singers.
